Pope Benedict XVI: His First Message
Habemus Papam!
We have a Pope!
Here is the text of Pope Benedict XVI's first message:
Dear brothers and sisters,
After the Great Pope John Paul II, the cardinals have elected me, a simple, humble worker in the Lord’s vineyard.
I am comforted by the fact that the Lord knows how to work and act even with insufficient instruments. And above all, I entrust myself to your prayers.
With the joy of the risen Lord and confidence in his constant help, we will go forward. The Lord will help us, and Mary his most holy mother will be alongside us.
Thank you.

I just came to your site for the first time - thanks, it is very good. I love reading Cardinal Ratzinger / Pope Benedict, and you are a fountain of his words.
A question: Who are the two men on either side of the Pope? I saw them on TV at John Paul's funeral, and now also beside Benedict. Do you know who they are?
Thomas
The one on the right is Cardinal Piero Marini, an Italian. The one on the left I am not certain of. Behind him though you cannot see him in this photo is Cardinal Sodano, the one who has been with the Pope in many photos. By the job he did, holding the mic, I would think it is a type of assistant in liturgical matters or chamberlain or maybe one of his deputies. Sorry can't give you an answer with the one on the left.
